Uganda's Top learning institution, Makerere University, on Wednesday was indefinitely closed following a continued strike by the University staff over demands for a 100% salary increament, which the Administration and the University Council has refused to bend to.
The decision to close the institution was announced by the university Council Chairman Dr Charles Wana Etyem at a press conference at Makerere main campus.
The University has in the recent years closed over strikes by the teaching and non-teaching staff over the same issue.
Prof John Ddumba-Ssentamu, the vice chancellor, explained last week that following their earlier meeting, the council, the highest decision making body, had agreed to engage their workers and encourage them to work as management continued to negotiate with government to take over the university wage bill, something the lecturers ignored.
