The Uganda National Examinations Board (U.N.E.B) on Monday released the 2012 Primary Leaving Examinations (P.L.E) showing a considerable improvement in performance as compared to the 2011 results.
88.4 per cent of candidates passed in 2012 compared to 86.4 per cent in 2011. 480, 067 pupils passed the examinations of the 565, 663 students who registered to sit the examinations.
English as per the reuslts was the best performed subject, followed by SST and then Science. Mathematics was the worst performed subject. 10.9 per cent students passed in Division One, compared to 9.6 per cent in 2011.
81.9 per cent of the 2012 candidates sat the examinations under government’s Universal Primary Education scheme. However, when asked for the percentage of UPE pupils who passed the examinations officials said they did not have the figure because it was “very difficult to compute.”
Fort Portal, with a 0.1 per cent failure rate, was the best performing municipality, followed by Ntungamo and Rukungiri with 0.2 per cent, Mbarara with 0.3 per cent, and Entebbe with 0.8 per cent.
The worst performing districts are Luuka with a 32.1 per cent failure rate, Kween with 30.5 per cent, Namutumba with 28.3 per cent, Bukwo with 27.7 per cent and Iganga with 25.2 per cent.
The results were handed over to the Minister of Educationa and Sports Hon. Jessica Alupo by the UNEB Chairperson Fagil Mandy at Statistics House in Kampala.
