In a bid to curb Phone crime in the Country, Uganda Communications Commission (U.C.C) on 31st August 2013 switched off all unregistered Sim cards issued by the different phone networks in the Country.
Close to 5 million Ugandan phone subscribers have been affected by this exercise which has been postponed more that twice to enable all Ugandan Sim card holders register their lines.
UCC Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi |
Security Minister Hon. Muruli Mukasa while addressing a press conference early this week, said, no more time will be allowed for the unregistered sim cards since enough time had been allocated for the exercise.
Despite having petitioned court on the matter by The Human Rights Network For Journalists-Uganda (HRNJ-U) and Legal Brains Trust, government gave UCC a go-ahead to switch off all unregistered cards.
The petitioners argued that there were many people who were likely to be inconvenienced by the switching off of their unregistered simcards.
While delivering his judgement, Justice Yasin Nyanzi said the process of sim card registration had been going on since February 2012 so no excuses should be given for not registering sim cards.
Uganda joins the rest of the East African Community member Countries who had this exercise complete early this year.
