Forum for Democratic Change Vice President for Eastern region, Proscovia Salaam Musumba was last night declared the winner of the Kamuli District Local Council Five by-election
after winning her main challenger and NRM's candidate Thomas Kategere.
She was declared winner in the presence of electoral commission Chairman Eng. Badru Kiggundu amid cheers from her supporters who had waited for this moment up to the wee hours of Friday morning.
She poled a total of 49, 356 votes making it a 67.6% share of the entire vote. Her closest rival, Kategere poled 21, 239 votes, an equvalent of 29.1%. of the total votes cast.
The other six who were independent polled as below:
Ibrahim Mbadhi 1,077 (1.5%) Kaloli Dhizaala 437 (0.6%), Charles Isanga 210 (0.3%), Fred Kamaniro 87 (0.1%), Michael Kifubangabo 346 (0.5%).
New FDC President Maj. Gen Mugisha Muntu, Jinja Municipality East MP Paul Mwiru and Dan Wandera Ogalo were seen monitoring polling stations.
The seat fell vacant in 2011 when court nullified the election of Kawugu Kawooya over lack of sufficient academic qualifications.
