In its focus on to the Africa continent and its wealth, American publication Forbes Magazine released a list of the richest Ugandan businessmen with property mogul Sudhir Ruparelia taking the first slot.
The magazine recognized five Ugandans as being among Africa's relatively unknown but successful entrepreneurs. The personalities are Sudhir Ruparelia, Patrick Bitature, Charles Mbire, Amiral Karmali, and Amos Nzeyi.
Forbes described the five personalities as "low-key, ultra wealthy tycoons, entrepreneurs and business leaders whose net worth is ove $50 million which experts say can fund a full sector of Uganda's economy like health, education for one and half years.
Who they are.
Sudhir Ruparelia.
He is the Chairperson of Ruparelia group of Companies that has come on to the top in Banking (Crane bank), Hotel ownership and management, insurance, education sector, real estate and other string of businesses. He was born in Uganda and later moved to the United Kingdom(U.K) at the age of 16 after president Amin's expulsion of ASians, where he did all kinds of odd jobs to earn a living. He later returned to Uganda after sanity had been restored with a personal saving of $25,000 which he used to start his first business and since then, he has never looked back.
Patrick Bitature.
He is the founder and owner of Simba Telecom, that deals in mobile phones and airtime retailing with branches across the East African region and beyond, he is also into hotel business, he is the board chairperson of Uganda Investment Authority (U.I.A) and power distribution company Umeme.
Charles Mbire.
He is the chairperson of MTN-Uganda and also a shareholder in the telecom giant. He is a board member to several multi-national companies operating in the country and he is the chairperson of Uganda Securities Exchange.
Amiral Karmali.
He is the founder of Mukwano group of companies, a manufacturing company specialising in production of household plastics, cosmetisc, cooking oil, toiletries, and many other products in their line of production.
Amos Nzeyi.
In fifth place, came Amos Nzeyi. He is the chairperson of crown beverages, the makers of pepsi, mirinda, mountain dew and also is a real estates mogul.
