Former Army commander and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) stalwart Major Gen. Mugisha Muntu has been declared the successor to
Col. Kiiza Besigye for the FDC party presidency.
Muntu managed to win his two other rivals Hon. Nandala Mafabi and Hon. Geoffrey Ekanya in a hotly contested poll.
Gen. Muntu scored 393 votes, Mr Mafabi, the Budadiri County MP and leader of Opposition in Parliament gathered 361 votes, while Mr Ekanya, the Tororo County MP scored 17 votes.
Muntu takes over from Col. Kiiza Besigye who has been the party president for Two terms and contested against president Museveni for the presidency of the country but lost all the three elections.
The party’s Electoral Chairperson, Dan Mugarura, said they were even unable to organize grassroots elections ahead of the delegates’ conference as earlier planned because they failed to raise the funds.
“So many of our would be funders feared to contribute money to the party because they do not want NRM government to know that they are supporting us,” said Mugarura.
