Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2013 tournament South Africa were on January 2 knocked out of the tournament after foiled penalty shootouts against West Africa's Mali.
South Africa scored their first goal in the first half and this kept them in the run for the trophy. However Mali through their captain Seydou Keita drew with the hosts in the second half.
At the end of the 90 minutes, the score board was still reading 1-1 which meant that they had to go for extra time.At the end of extra time, the score was still 1-1.
The game was then pushed to penalties. South Africa scored their first and only penalty shot though Siphiwe Tshabalala after which Mali leveled the scoreline.
South Africa fouled on their second, third and fourth attempt with Mali scoring on both their second and third attempt.
At the end of it all, the scoreline read South Africa 1- 3 Mali and Mali went through to the semi finals of the tournament.
