Human Rights Network for Journalists has petitioned court over the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) and government of Uganda sim card registration exercise that is scheduled to close on the February 28 2013 and will see all sim cards not registered by that time switched off their networks.
The petitioners say the exercise was launched without the consent and approval of Parliament yet all decisions that affect the common people are to be concluded by Parliament.
They also claim the time given by UCC was not adequate for the over 17 million mobile phone subscribers to complete the sim card registration exercise.
Hearing of their petition is set for February 25. UCC however says they are not going to give an extension of the deadline claiming the time was adequate for all users. They say, over 60% of Uganda's sim card holders have registered.
