Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday held his last mass as a Pope at St. Peter's Square at the Vatican in Rome. It was an emotional moment as he had his last prayer. The Pope however assured all faithfuls that he would not "abandon" the Church.
Tens of thousands of believers turned up for the prayers ahead of the Pope's formal resignation on Thursday. They clapped, chanted and cheered on as he said his last words.
Pope Benedict said God had called him to dedicate himself prayers and meditation.
"The Lord is calling me to climb the mountain, to dedicate myself even more to prayer and meditation but this doesn't mean abandoning the Church", said the Pope amid cheers.
He had his last mass through the window of his residence at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. "If God is asking me to do this, it is precisely so i can continue to serve Him with the same dedication and love as before in a way that is more appropriate for my age and strength", he said.
Pope Benedict XVI early this month announced he would be resigning on February 28. This announcement came as a shock to many since it has not been heard of for close to six centuries.
