Florence Andiru Nebanda of the rulling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and sister to the late Butaleja Woman Member of Parliament was on Monday evening declared the winner of the Butaleja District Woman MP By-election after defeating four of her other competitors.
The Butaleja Parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of the then Woman MP, Cerinah Nebanda late last year under unclear circumstances.
On Monday evening at 11:15 pm, Mabel Wakabi, the Butaleja District Electoral Commission Registrar announced that Andiru Nebanda scored a total of 27, 338 votes against her closet rival Betty Hamba, an independent who got 12, 157 votes.
Sarah Annet Logose, an independent, was third with a total of 3, 393 votes while FDC’s Felistas Namwihiri got 3, 262 and Munabi Perusi, who contested as an independent got 1, 332 votes.
The election registered very poor turn up of voters with almost half of the 92, 242 registered voters in the 151 polling stations in Butaleja district failing to cast their votes.

Celebrations among the NRM supporters were sparked off after the declaration by the returning officer that the party had retained the Parliamentary seat, and went through the night.
Andiru therefore takes over from the late sister and had promised during the campaigns to accomplish what her sister had started on.
