Forum for Democratic Change's candidate in the Makerere University Guild Presidential race Anna Adeke Ebaju was this Monday declared the winner of the hotly contested race, beating seven other candidates with a landslide victory, including Henry Boniface Okot of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
She was elected by fellow female students who began queuing up as early as 7am. Polling took place at 26 polling stations and provisional results showed Adeke winning even at Okot’s Faculty of Technology where the NRM candidate voted from.
Anna Adeke Ebaju, garnered 6,609 votes (60.87%) out of the total 10,949 to beat her closest opponent Henry Boniface Okot of National Resistance movement (NRM) who got 2,718 votes (25.03%).
There was heavy Police deployment as the force didn't want to take chances having seen bloody scenes at the freedom square during the Sunday final rally where NRM supporters from Lumumba Hall where Okot resides went on rampage, beating up everybody they found in their way.
Adeke has won at most schools, colleges and faculties. She led at the School of Fine Art, College of Business and Management Studies, Faculty of Computer Science and Social Sciences.
In the race were eight candidates- National Resistance Movement (NRM) fronted Henry Boniface, Forum fo Democratic Change (FDC) fronted Anna Adeke, Democratic Party (DP) fronted Martin Wandera, Conservative party fronted Ronald Wandera. Musa Byamaka, Martin Twinamasiko, Isaac Ssekkonse, Kokas Okello all came as Independents.
Adeke's win means NRM gets off the helm of Makerere's leadership which they have held for over seven years consecutive.
