After two days of secrecy and being locked up in the doors of Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, Catholic Cardinals on Wednesday night came to a consensus and elected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the new head of the world's largest faith.
Jorge Mario's election is to fill the position of the Pope which fell vacant after the resignation of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on February 28 citing old age and ill health.
At about 21:06 EAT, the dark smoke that had been seen through the chimney on top of Sistine Chapel turned white, a sign that the Cardinals had successfully elected a new Pope.
115 Cardinals from across the world entered Sistine Chapel on Tuesday and started the process.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is from the Latin American country of Argentina and becomes the 266 Pope to lead the Catholic Church. He is the very first Pope to come from Latin America and the very first to adopt the name of POPE FRANCIS which he preferred after his election.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio holds a degree in Chemistry and is said to be a down to earth Cardinal who most have called " The ambassador of the poor people".
He was elected after the 5th vote from when the Cardinals entered the Sistine Chapel.
He therefore attained the required majority vote of 2/3 of the total number of votes cast by the 115 Cardinals.
He had his first words heard by the overwhelming joyous Christians who had gathered at the St. Peter's square minutes after his pronouncement. He bowed down and asked all Christians to pray for him as he takes on this new duty.
