On March 13 2013, the world witnessed history being made as a new Catholic Pope to replace Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI was elected at the Sistine Chapel by 115 cardinals from across the world.
It was the first time in the history of the Catholic Church that a Pope has come from the Americas, Argentina to be specific, he is the first Pope to take up the name of Pope Francis.

He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17 1936 in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires to Mario José Bergoglio, a railway worker and Regina María Sivori, a housewife.
He went to school and graduated with a Degree in Chemistry as a Chemistry Technician.
In 1958, he joined the Society of Christ and studied to become a Priest at the Jesuit Seminary in Villa Devoto.
In 1963, he attained a Degree in Philosphy from Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel.
Between 1964 and 1965 he taught Literature and Psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in the province of Santa Fe.
In 1966, he taught at El-Salvador University in Buenos Aires.
Between 1967 and 1970, he studied Theology at San Miguel, Buenos Aires province.
In 1969, he was Ordained a Priest by Ramon Jose Castellano.
Between 1971 and 1973, he taught Theology at a Seminary in a Buenos Aires province.
Between 1980 and 1986, he was appointed a Rector at San Miguel, Buenos Aires province.
In 1986, he went to Germany for further studies.
In the early 1990s, Bergoglio was named Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires and was ordained on 27 June 1992 as Titular Bishop of Auca.
Bergoglio succeeded Cardinal Quarracino as Archbishop of Buenos Aires on 28 February 1998.
On the 21 February 2001, Archbishop Bergoglio was made a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II.
On 13 March 2013 at around 19:06 Italilan time, he was elected the New Pope of the Roman Catholic Church after being elected by 2/3 of the 115 Cardinals at the Sistine Chapel, making him the 266 Pope of the world's largest Church.
