Kategaya, a childhood friend of President Yoweri Museveni right from the days of the bush wars, was considered the country’s de facto Number Two until 2003 when acrimonious debates about lifting of the constitutional provision on presidential term limits, which he opposed, polarised him and the President.
The cause of death was not clear by press time, but doctors said they had previously discovered a blood clot in Kategaya’s leg that was suspected to drift toward his brain.
His close friend and Presidential Advisor on media affairs, John Nagenda described Kategaya as a man of the people, who loved his country and always to see the best come to the country. He said the country had lost a resource in Eriya Kategaya.
Kategaya was a lawyer by profession and this helped him to keep on the helm of Uganda and East Africa's politics
