A section of Ugandan Members of Parliament on Monday withdrew and returned money that was wired on to their accounts over the weekend as facilitation for them to make consultations with their electorate on the proposed Marriage and Divorce Bill.
William Nzoghu, the Busongora North MP returned his early morning as he waved shs. 50,000 notes for all to see and saying that he was not contented that the money he had received was genuine money.
MP. Nsereko opted to live by example and returned the money. |
The MP who belongs to the opposition Forum for Democratic Change said considering the morals which he has grown up with, he cannot take the money.
He also pointed out the fact that the Ugandan economy is bleeding and Civil servants such as police officers, nurses and teachers have not received their salaries yet the Members of Parliament, who according to him are much better than other Civil Servants financially are given free money in the guise of facilitation for consultation.
Kampala Central MP, Hon. Muhammad Nsereko also returned the money. Nsereko says the money has other better things to be used for like paying salaries of many civil servants, purchase of drugs in the health centers.
The money was in given to the MPs following a directive from President Yoweri Museveni recently that the 386 Members of Parliament be given shs. 5 million each to help them in the process of consultations in their constituencies on the controversial Marriage and Divorce Bill that has bred alot of debate among the electorates.
Many members of the public have come out to oppose the bill and advise Parliament to waste time on issues that impact the common Ugandan positively.
Some MPs however are happy after receiving the money saying they had spent more money during the consultations. Among these are Geoffrey Ekanya, Betty Amongin, Besasira Ignatius, Naome Kabasharira.
The money came at a time when NRM legislators had been summoned to meet the President this week over the same Bill.
