Public transport service provider Pioneer Easy Bus has been given one month to clear all the outstanding shs.8b debt the company ownUganda Revenue Authority (URA) in taxes. The concesus was reached by URA and the company's management in a bid to save the company's assets.
URA had threatened to sale off the company's buses by public auction if the management diod not heed to the call by the tax body to have their debts cleared. The grace period has therefore brought to halt the public auction exercise.
“While we want to collect taxes, we do not want to hinder investment. We have given them 30 days to settle the tax debts after which we will auction the buses,” a statement from URA officials stated.
The buses will however not be allowed to operate not until they have cleared the tax body. “The buses will remain in our custody until they clear the entire debt,” added the statement.
The bus company had won many public hearts and was seen as the most viable means of transport to save the public and Kampala City of traffic jam caused by small commuter taxis that ply all routes to and from the city centre.
