As part of his African tour, American President Barack Obama flew to South Africa on Friday to pay homage to the critically ill former South African President Nelson Mandela who according to sources is currently on life support.
Obama set his first foot in Senegal and while there, he described Mandela as "a personal hero."
The US president recalled how Mandela had inspired him to take up political activity, when he campaigned for the anti-apartheid movement as a student in the late 1970s.
Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years as he fought against the white man's policy of apartheid that was characterised by the segregation of Africans on their own land.
He was later released in 1994 and ruled South Africa for only 4 years.
He is considered by many as The Icon for African Democratic leadership.
Mandela's leadership style is a challenge o many African leaders who want to rule forever and yet with little or no positive impact on to the people they lead and their communities.
Africa is known for over 5 long serving presidents who have turned into dictators.
