Although the deadline for exchange of the 1987 Bank note series has passed, there is still hope for all those who did not make it on time to have their old notes changed to the 2010 currency notes.
However the only place where the exchange the old notes can be done is in the Bank of Uganda Currency centres spread across the Country and this will go up to 31 December 2013, beyond which it will be a loss to all those who will be holding them.

After this period, all the old currency notes will be declared illegal tender and can not be accepted anywhere in the country.
Bank of Uganda has centres in Arua, Gulu, Mbale, Mbarara, Jinja, Kampala, Masaka, Kabale and Fort Portal.
Commercial banks stopped exchanging the old currency notes on 30th May 2013 as they had been instructed by Bank of Uganda.
Dr. Jan Tibamwenda, the Bank of Uganda director of communications, said the exercise of withdrawing old notes has been hugely successful with only about 1% of the old notes still left in circulation.
Early this year, Bank of Uganda announced that they would be recalling all bank notes that were issued prior to 2010 in order to give room for the new bank notes to circulate and have only one currency in the market.
The recalled notes are in the denominations of shs50,000, shs20,000, shs10,000, shs5,000, shs1,000 as well as the shs10,000 CHOGM note that was issued in commemoration of the 2007 Common Wealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) hosted by Uganda in 2007.
