Kampala City traders on Wednesday resolved to keep their shops closed as negotiations with the government over the proposal to impose a pre-inspection of goods fee are on going.
In a meeting convened at Diamond Hotel in Kampala, the traders under their umbrella association, Kampala City Traders Association (Kacita) decided not to open their businesses until government meets their demands.
The decision to keep shops closed came after Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Minister Amelia Kyambadde tabled a set of fake products on the market and Parliament sided with her on the pre-inspection of goods programme which will help UNBS rid the Ugandan markets of fake and substandard products.
Among the items tabled by Amelia were sanitary pads, electronic adapters, tinned milk, shoes and shoe polish.
The traders' strike that kicked off on Tuesday will now go up to Monday if demands to the government are not addressed.
