Hon. Michael Mawanda and Isaac Musumba. |
Former Regional affairs Minister Isaac Musumba, Igara west MP Michael Mawanda and businessman Yakuba Mathai have all been set free from detention in India after the Supreme Court in India ruled that their detention was unlawful.
The trio were arrested and detained in India on April 20 2013 over claims that were extorting money from an Indian Company Videocon industries.
Musumba said their arrest was a set up because they had gone to the company to claim for the pay of Yakuba Mathai for the service he had offered the said Company. Musumba also denied the allegations of extortion saying he had only gone to India to offer legal advise to his client Yakuba Mathai.
The Supreme Court Judge ruled that the charges of extortion were "baseless" and therefore should be thrown out. The judge also said the claims of criminal trespass by Videocon Company were false since they (Videocon) had been dealing with the trio in business transactions.
Court also ordered for the release of the travel documents of the three suspects.
