Businessmen and women have threatened to close all their shops and stay home for two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) over what they are calling "unfair treatment of traders" by the Government which is planning to implement the pre-inspection of goods programme.
The programme compels importers to a mandatory standard check of their goods before shipping them into the country.
The Pre-import Verification of Conformity to Standards programme (PIVOC), which is being enforced by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards, requires the traders to have their goods inspected for quality in countries of origin.
“We have agreed to close our shops beginning tomorrow until the government stops the PIVOC programme,”said Mr Everest Kayondo, the Chairperson of Kampala City Traders Association. (KACITA).
Many of the city traders have vowed to join the strike which, according to the KACITA spokesperson Issa Ssekitto, was decided in a joint meeting with the traders.
Police is however warning the public against the planned demonstration saying they will deal with whoever is behind the plan.
Some circles in the Police force say the traders are being used by some opposition politicians to cuase havoc in the city.
