Three people including a Professor were on Wednesday found guilty of aggravated trafficking of human body organs, charged and remanded to Luriza prisons.
Lt. Col John Kundu Wangusi, 56, attached to UPDF Air base, Prof. Vasudev Chaturvedi, 67, the vice president of Krishna Institute of Medical Science (KIMS) on Wednesday appeared before Buganda Road chief magistrate Olive Namukwaya.
The third suspect charged together with the UPDF officer and the Professor is an Information technology (IT) student of Makerere University Christopher Ogwal, 23.
According to prosecution led by the Resident State Attorney, Steven Asaba, the three accused persons committed the offense between March and June last year.
It is alleged that the victim, one Sekyewa was contacted by Ogwal to donate his kidney and was promised shs.200m, a new house and a set of other goodies incase the procedure was successful.
Police investigations established that upon reaching India, Sekyewa is reported to have had second thoughts about the operation and asked to return home. However, Prof. Vasudev and the medical team allegedly drugged him and extracted one of his kidneys after dossing him with a chemical that made him lose his senses.
When he late regained his mind, he realised that one of his kidneys had been removed. The Kidney was purportedly to save the life of Lt. Col John Kundu Wangusi's son Isaac Wadwoda, 22.
In yesterday’s court session, the trio represented by lawyer Eric Kiingi, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and they were remanded to Luzira Prison until today when their bail application will come up.
