Uganda has in the recent days experienced strikes by taxi drivers across the country over the increase in fines imposed on drivers drivers found breaking the laid down traffic rules.
Most of these strikes have been violent and led to loss of lives and property. In Jinja, a 15 year old boy was shot dead by a Police officer during a chase with the striking taxi drivers. Residents said the boy was neither part of the drivers nor involved in the strike.
In Fort-portal, the routes have been blocked and passage is only allowed to passenger buses. One of Link Transport Company buses had its glass hit by one of the protesters who later disappeared in the crowds.
In May this year, the Police traffic department increased traffic fees for respective traffic offences, with many having the fees almost doubled. This has not gone well with taxi drivers who say the fees are exorbitant compared to the money they make from their business.
Over speeding for example was increased from shs.80,000 to shs.200,000, bad driving was raised from shs.100,000 to shs.200,000.
