Bukenya believes he can win President Museveni for the NRM Party's flag bearer despite having lost the position of the Secretary General during the 2011 NRM primaries at Namboole.
"Everybody knows what happened in Namboole. Do you how much money was distributed in Namboole? Was it a fair election when there was no voters' register? We just kept quiet and accepted the results. It is not advisable to scratch a wound that is healing," Defended Bukenya when asked if he believes he can win the Presidential flag bearer-ship.
Bukenya says by standing against Museveni, he wants to end what he refered to as "a monopoly of political leadership."
"For those who underestimate me saying I cannot win the contest, I assure them that only death will stop me from reaching there. As long as am still alive I will contest for presidency in 2016," Bukenya said adding that if the NRM primaries are rigged, he will contest as independent presidential candidate.
Bukenya says he launched his bid to run for the Country's top job on Thursday last week. He stresses that he has instituted a strong team of people to spearhead his campaign that will enable him oust his former boss.
Bukenya who has been in trouble over claims of corruption and embezzlement of the CHOGM funds has called upon all his party members to ensure that the party's voter's register is not tampered with inorder to attain a free and fair primary elections of the party office flag bearers.
"I want the NRM voters' register to be well prepared in advance and I don't want to see any tendencies of bribing voters with money or any form of intimidation. I don't want last minute preparations. The process should begin now," Bukenya stated.
NRM Party Spokesperson and Minister for Information Mary Karooro Okurut said, "Any party faithful is free to contest to become our flag bearer. However, they must go through the checks and benchmarks laid down in our NRM party constitution. He will have to be subjected to an internal vote and if he passes he will be our presidential flag bearer."
