Dr. Asingya Kapuru, the Mulago Hospital Doctor accused of involvement in the swapping and subsequent theft of a baby at the National Referral Hospital has been arrested. Kapuru went missing last week, prompting Police to mount a search for him.
According to the Police Deputy spokesman Patrick Onyango said Kapuru was being interrogated at the Criminal Investigation Headquarters in Kibuli.
Dr. Kapuru was last week suspended by the the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council in connection with the disappearance of a baby in the same hospital seven years ago.
In their ruling, the council chairperson, Prof Joel Okullo, said the doctor was guilty of gross professional misconduct after he admitted to altering medical records to show that the mother, Ms Sauda Nakiibi, had delivered a baby girl.
Original records show that Ms Nakiibi delivered a baby boy by caesarean section on July 13, 2006, at about 11am.
When the mother recovered from anesthesia and asked to see her baby, she was told that she had delivered a boy, who was in the special care unit because apparently, he had developed complications.
