President Yoweri Museveni has advised the striking Makerere University Lecturers and staff to call their strike and return for work in not more than two weeks or else face the axe since their current demand for a 100% salary increament is not possible.
Speaking at one of his visits to the NRA war veterans, Museveni said salaries of Lecturers and Teachers will be looked at later but priority is at the moment put on improving infrastructure like roads and the oil mining industry.
" We have now shut the university. If lecturers don’t want to go back to work, let them go and rear goats. I’m tired of these games, they should stop. The budget is read during the day and everybody knows when it is read, highlighting how different issues are to be addressed throughout the financial year. They would discuss and say, remove this road or that project and put that money on our salaries", said the President.
University Staff last week went on a sit down strike, prompting the University Council to close down Uganda's top training institution on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, security in heightened at the University Campus to avert any chaos from both students and the Lecturers. Police is allover the University premises and the area is now a no-go-zone to the public.
Kampala Police Commander Andrew Kaweesi told the press that the heavy deployment is to protect the property of the University as the bicker between the University staff and Council over terms of work continues.
Police check points were established at entrance points into the university. “We shall not entertain any form of lingering within campus. Weddings, rallies, workshops, symposiums, discussions are not allowed," said Kaweesi.
