Makerere University Staff under their umbrella association, Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) on Thursday resolved to resume work after over two weeks of a sit down strike resulting from Government's failure to offer them 100% pay raise.
The meeting was led by MUASA Chairperson, Dr. Mohammed Kiggundu.
After the resolution, the University Council announced that the Institution is now officially open and students will start reporting from next week to resume normal lectures.
The University staff calmed down after the staff association agreed to the university council’s proposal to consolidate the 36 allowances to pay a 70% top-up incentive allowance to each member of staff on Tuesday.
“In addition to the salary that each member of staff receives, the University Council has proposed 70% incentive allowance for every member of staff, as the University Council continues to engage the Government of Uganda for the 100% salary increment,” said Ritah Namisango, the university spokesperson.
This development comes after the University Council announced a 20% increament on to all staff salaries. The announcement was made by the Vice Chancellor Dr. Ddumba Ssentamu. This was however rejected by MUASA and they vowed to continue with the strike.
The 20%increament is to affect most of the University's sections whose funds were relocated to cater for this increament.
Some of the allowances to be scrapped include marking of exams allowance hitherto for academic staff only, and another for teaching evening classes.
Others include administrative allowance which was paid to academic staff elected into administrative offices like deans.
Uganda's top learning Institution has been closed for over two weeks after lecturers and other staff laid down their tools, demanding a 100% salary increament. Government however rejected their request saying 100% was impossible since there was no money to cater for it.
