Robert Mugabe being decorated soon after his swearing-in for a Seventh term in Harare, Zimbabwe |
The swearing-in ceremony was held at the National Stadium in Zimbabwe, fully packed with Jubilant supporters.
Festooned in a sash, garland and medals, the 89-year-old dismissed accusations the July 31 election that returned him to power was rigged and vowed to rejuvenate the foreign-dominated banking and mining sectors.
Mugabe's election for another term was received with mixed reaction especially from the Western powers who said they doubted the credibility of the polls.
The Opposition in Zimbabwe, led by Morgan Tsvangirai also claimed the polls were not free and fair, were marred by violence and rigging.
The African Union, approved of the results saying they were "free and fair".
In his inaugural speech, Mugabe said "I promise you better conditions," amid cheers from his supporters in the fully packed National stadium.
"The mining sector will be the centrepiece of our economic recovery and growth. It should generate growth spurts across sector, reignite that economic miracle which must now happen."added Mugabe.
He said again that Zimbabwe can survive with or without the Western powers. "We continue to look East," Mugabe said lampooning, Western countries which have called into question the legitimacy of his election victory.
Mugabe won the July 31st polls with a 61% landslide victory over his closest rival and former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's 34% and also took two thirds of the seats in Parliament.
