The two were living together and sharing a small rented room at Buwalasi View, a suburb of Mbale Municipality.
According to eye witnesses, the Wednesday incident was sparked by an argument over a sachet of waragi. The disagreement later degenerated into a fight. The students who witnessed the scuffle thought the two were playing since they had been very good friends for a very long time.
Lukoli was allegedly stabbed to death during the fight and died instantly. Ms Diana Nandawula, the Elgon Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident.
Nandawula said preliminary investigations indicate that the two students spent the day in the bar drinking alcohol.
In July 2012, a similar incident occurred at Bugisu High School in Mbale, when a female student stabbed of her colleagues to death and injured another. Lillian Nake then aged 20 and in Senior Four, killed Catherine Wegosasa and injured Caroline Marole during a fight over a pair of shoes.
Alcohol and drug abuse in Uganda has become a common practice and has left many in problems, with others dying and others spending a life time in jail, serving sentences.
